Cannabiz Australia Interview: MCCA inaugural CEO Gail Morgan outlines vision in first interview

If you follow the minutae of Australian Cannabis industry body organisations you’ll know there used to be two bodies, both names i now forget , who after much dithering and discussion have forged to become one.

It is called Medicinal Cannabis Council Australia or MCCA, another name that will constantly escape me in the years to come and i will always have to google it to check exactly who they are.

As Cannabiz Australia have just interviewed their new CEO, Gail Morgan, who is embedded in the Australia Cannerati scene along with it seems everybody else connected with this mysterious organisation.

Why do i say mysterious?

Well because the first thing i always do is check that the website works properly – it doesn’t.

That went well !

If you want to know about them this is the best i could find.

I’m presuming most of their money comes from cannabis industry or similar.

Officially I can tell you

Lots of “Donations & Bequests” . from whom? it would be interesting to know.

Let’s hope not too much from Montu who it has just been revealed may have Montu accused of deleting documents in TGA advertising case

I do love the classic “all other expenses” – so beloved of another of my favourite outfits, The Last Prisoner Project in the US

This is the intro to the Cannabiz interview – the rest of it is behind a paywall.

MCCA inaugural CEO Gail Morgan outlines vision in first interview

Google AI tells us the interview says this

In her first official interview with Cannabiz, the newly appointed inaugural CEO of the Medicinal Cannabis Council Australia (MCCA), Gail Morgan, shared her vision to transform the organization into a primary source of advice for governments. Morgan, who formerly served as the head of strategy and government relations at Medicines Australia, took the role to mix her deep experience in policy, politics, and healthcare advocacy. [1]
Key Takeaways from Gail Morgan’s Interview
    • Government Resource: She wants the MCCA to be the top “go-to” body that Australian governments consult for expert advice on medicinal cannabis. [1]
    • Industry Growth: Morgan expressed excitement about shaping the identity of the young and growing industry. [1]
    • Strategic Experience: She plans to leverage her three decades of experience working closely with public affairs, healthcare, and political systems. [1, 2]

I thought i’d take a quick look at their Responsible People

For the likes of an old cynic it all makes for fairly depressing reading.
First we have Ean who likes post expressionist aussie beachside mansion art with a slight nod to indigenous culture but not too much, mind you.
He is the CEO & Director of Altum who do this

Altum International exists to bring the life-changing benefits of cannabinoids back to the Asia-Pacific region. Through its comprehensive range of B2C and B2B cannabinoid products, Altum navigates a complex regulatory landscape in order to meet an exploding regional demand for the next generation of consumer wellness; all powered by quality, cost-competitive and highly effective cannabinoids.

From 2019, Altum has launched a line of consumer-friendly CBD products (Felix & Co), as well as plug-and-play CBD inputs for business operators (LIFE CBD) for the Asia-Pacific markets. Following this, Altum launched Found, Asia-Pacific’s first CBD retail platform and café – designed to educate consumers and elevate category awareness. In 2021 Altum launched Kind Medical, its first THC-containing medicinal cannabis in the Australian market.

With a global mindset and regionally oriented team, Altum is creating sustainable value for its shareholders and partners through “World-First” concepts, resonant brands, and safe, compliant access to cannabinoids for Asia-Pacific.

No surprise there.
More depressingly he’s also in the “Defense” with an “s” game. Sigh…
Next we have Geoff. He’s a partner at Mills Oakley the same firm as Teresa Nicoletti the lawyer who has run the cannabis game in Australia for yonks now. She used to head up one of those previous organisations whose name as i said earlier I can never remember and essentially ran the campaign to combine the two orgs to create the MCCA. She’s now “stepped away” and Mills Oakley have kept their influence by moving Geoff into place.
He said this on linked in a few weeks back . He remembers what the previous orgs are called.
BTW, are you like me, sick and tired of the overuse of the word “Stakeholder” ?
Then there’s Nick , he owns a dispensary and does loads of stuff
Phoebe is General Manager of Product and Industry Development at Cannatrek,
They do this sort of thing

At long last somebody who actually might know something about Medical Cannabis, Priya  is a real doctor, yes a real one. She works for Releaf.

That said Releaf’ is the company who did a deal to sell Cookies in Australia. a west coast USA recreational cannabis outfit that’s more of a brand than a business run by former rapper Gilbert Anthony Milam Jr. aka Berner

The man lives in a constant state of litigation and i’ve never really been sure what the Cookies product line actually has to do with what’s defined as “medical” cannabis in Australia. I’m sure Priya as the controller of prescriptions at the company can tell me.

Finally there is Sharon Bentley and yes you guessed it Sharon is the CEO of a cannabis company. Hers is called Medicinal Cannabis Australia (MCA)

In usual Australian fashion a self -selecting elite is in the making and consolidating across the board.

It is the Australian way of doing things and cannabis is no different; but remember we are all just ordinary down to earth Aussies
