Chile offers favorable climates for the cultivation of cannabis and coca leaf. Although it legalized medicinal cannabis before other Latin American countries, Chile has not yet decriminalized non-medicinal use of the plant, as reported by High Times.

Importing cannabis for personal use is not allowed, even for medicinal purposes, except for Chilean citizens importing their medicinal cannabis. Chile’s hemp cultivation history dates back to the 16th century, and the country has high marijuana usage rates in Latin America.

Chile has been a pioneer in medicinal cannabis in South America with a cultivation and medicine production program for patients since 2014. Additionally, patients have access to Canadian products through pharmacies in Santiago.

The decriminalization of cannabis for personal consumption was in progress, but the legislation is on hold. Private medicinal use of the plant is legal, indicating a possible opening for future legalization. Recently, Chile’s constitutional convention was established, and most delegates seem to support the effective decriminalization of cannabis.

Although cocaine is illegal, Chile allows legal use of coca leaf in its unprocessed form, traditionally used as tea and with a long history in the country as a treatment for altitude sickness.

The search for advancements in research and application of medicinal cannabis and industrial hemp gains new momentum with the initiative of the Parliamentary Front of Cannabis of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp).

With a total investment of R$ 500,000 from individual parliamentary amendments, this action aims to stimulate scientific, technological, and health development, boosting the implementation of the recent State Law 17,618/23 that incorporates medicinal cannabis into the SUS (Unified Health System) in São Paulo.
