Guam cannabis regulators have approved the territory’s first-ever cannabis permit to operate, seven years after adult-use cannabis was legalized on the island, the Pacific Daily News reports.
The Cannabis Control Board unanimously approved the operating permit for Guam’s Real Deal LLC, which does business as Deep Green Guam, during its regular meeting on Wednesday. The company holds a Type IV cultivator license, allowing it to grow cannabis in an operation of up to 10,000 square feet.
Compliance Inspector Meiko Cepeda told the board that the company had received the required agency clearances and passed a walkthrough inspection of its facility, according to the report.
“We received all the different agencies’ clearances. We did a thorough walkthrough of Real Deal’s establishment. We recommend approval,” Cepeda said.
Marie Lizama, vice chair of the Cannabis Control Board, said the approval marks the furthest any applicant has advanced in Guam’s cannabis licensing process and said the company had “paved the way for future local cannabis industry establishments.”
The Department of Revenue and Taxation said additional steps remain before Guam’s Real Deal can begin production or sales, but the approval makes the company the first cannabis business on the island to secure an operating permit after meeting all mandatory clearances and requirements.
Guam legalized adult-use cannabis on April 19, 2019, but industry rules and regulations were not adopted until May 2022. During Wednesday’s meeting, regulators also discussed applications from two additional cultivators, though both were tabled. As of June 10, according to the report, the board’s application status list included eight expired applications, three canceled applications, seven renewed applications, and one completed application.
