The council said its actions are effective immediately and are the result of “ongoing challenges” with the regulatory system including resources and enforcement.

In a recent statement, the council said it also considered community feedback received during a public comment period that began May 29 and continued to June 30. The public comment initiative gave Six Nations residents an opportunity to share feedback on a proposed transition away from cannabis regulation.

Six Nations council established laws and regulations in 2021 in response to Canada’s legalization of cannabis in 2018. The aim was to support public health and safety; sale and acquisition of safe products; law and order; and an awareness of health risks related to cannabis.

Since then, changes have been made to strengthen regulations, the council said.

“However, ongoing challenges persist including compliance, enforcement, and financial sustainability,” said the statement. “After investing $4.86 million in cannabis regulation on the territory, there was only one licensed business in the community at the start of the comment period.”

The elected council, as part of its repeal strategy, has directed the Six Nations Cannabis Commission Corp. to take the necessary steps to dissolve the corporation.

Meanwhile, the elected council said it remains committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Six Nations community members.
