Cocaine worth £40m recovered from sea before reaching Sussex

A £40 million cocaine shipment recovered from the sea was brought ashore at Medmerry Beach, near Selsey, where law enforcement officers were waiting for the boat carrying the drugs, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has said

Eleven criminals have been convicted over a plot to retrieve 500kg of cocaine from the sea, after GPS trackers fitted to waterproof bundles of the drugs initially failed.

According to the NCA, the cocaine had a street value of £40 million and was recovered by a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) which sailed to Medmerry Beach in West Sussex.

“It is believed the drugs were dropped into the water about 40 nautical miles south of the Needles, to the west of the Isle of Wight, by an accomplice crew aboard a container ship,” an NCA statement read.
