Pakistan: Lahore High Court has acquitted Zulfiqar Ali in a narcotics case after finding shortcomings in the prosecution’s evidence concerning the recovery and custody of six kilograms of hashish.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh allowed Zulfiqar Ali’s appeal and quashed the 14-year imprisonment sentence imposed by the trial court. The accused had remained behind bars for almost three years.

The court observed that presenting a sealed parcel containing narcotics before the court does not, by itself, establish that the recovered substance is the same material allegedly seized from the accused. It said prosecution witnesses should be allowed to identify the narcotics after the parcel is opened during the trial.
