Costa Rica’s emerging medical cannabis industry has achieved another major milestone in recent days, with the announcement that the nation’s first medical cannabis manufacturing laboratory has opened. Hybrida Farms, an established medical cannabis company in Costa Rica and a subsidiary of Vantage Point Global, launched the laboratory.

Hybrida Farms has historically produced cannabis for export as a raw material. Back in March, the company announced Costa Rica’s first-ever successful completion of a pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis export to the European Union. Hybrida Farms’ recently opened laboratory will allow the company to produce products in Costa Rica instead of sending harvests overseas for processing.
Costa Rica first adopted medical cannabis legalization in 2022 with the passage of Law 10,113. The adoption of the cannabis policy modernization measure also allows hemp production for food and industrial purposes.
Europe is a top destination for medical cannabis exports from other countries, and European markets are a top target for Hybrida Farms. Germany is a particularly popular market for medical cannabis exports, with the European nation having imported over 67 tonnes of medical cannabis products in Q1 2026 alone.
At the most recent International Cannabis Business Conference in Berlin, Beau Whitney, founder of Whitney Economics, projected that the global industrial hemp industry could be worth as much as $456.2 billion. By comparison, Beau Whitney’s estimate for the potential global medical and adult-use cannabis market is roughly $237.8 billion.
