HAYWARD — A Sacramento man has been arrested and charged with attempting to kill his pregnant girlfriend after the two argued about him smoking marijuana near her, according to court records.
The 18-year-old suspect allegedly fired a pistol three times at his girlfriend as she attempted to run away during the confrontation. Police say after she yelled at him for smoking marijuana too close by, he put the woman in a headlock and choked her. When she wrangled free, he allegedly shot at her but missed.
The shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. July 14, on Dixon Street, at the alleged victim’s grandmother’s home, authorities said.
The man was arrested July 16 in Fairfield, and has already been released from jail on a GPS monitoring device, court records show. While he’s out he has been ordered to attend trade school, seek mental health treatment, and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, court records show. He is next due for a hearing on Aug. 21.
When police arrested the man, he claimed the gun went off accidentally during a struggle and that the woman fired twice in the air to scare him off, according to court records. Alameda County prosecutors have charged him with attempted murder, assault with a firearm, making criminal threats and carrying a concealed pistol in public, court records show.
