Canada: Cape Breton Liberal MLA says gov’t should press “pause” on illegal cannabis directive

December 12, 2025

Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette says the province is showing a lack of respect for Indigenous communities.

This after Justice Minister Scott Armstrong issued a directive to police to crack down on illegal cannabis dispensaries.

Armstrong is asking Mi’kmaq chiefs for their co-operation, as dispensaries are located in some Indigenous communities around the province.

But Mombourquette says the province should have consulted Mi’kmaq leaders before the announcement because many were surprised to learn about the directive.

Mombourquette says communication is key with all parties involved for a common goal of safe communities.

Meanwhile, Chief Terry Paul of Membertou near Sydney says the province doesn’t have jurisdiction to govern Mi’kmaq communities and they don’t have an understanding of what happens in them.

The Mounties say they have no plans to change their approach to tackling illegal cannabis because they are already enforcing existing laws.
