MONTREAL — A 49-year-old man who has been poaching lobsters in Sept-Îles was arrested Friday morning by law enforcement officers. Poaching as in illegally hunting, not cooking in a hot liquid. The man was sitting on the dock of the bay at Pointe-au-Basques, close to the Sept-Îles marina when officers with the Sûrété du Québec and Fisheries and Oceans Canada closed in on him at 2:40 a.m.
His arrest was the culmination of an investigation following several complaints that the man was illegally trapping the tasty crustaceans without a permit. When police searched him, they found a small quantity of cocaine, but no drawn butter. He was also wanted on another criminal matter unrelated to shellfish.
He will go before a judge on charges of drug possession, fishing without a license, fishing outside of the season and possession of lobster smaller than prescribed by law.
