The Director, Legal will be responsible for providing practical and innovative advice to all TGOD business units with a focus on commercial contracts, new business development and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will need to stay up to date on the rapidly evolving commercial, legal and regulatory landscape affecting the cannabis industry and be proactive in identifying risk and developing mitigation strategies to protect and grow TGOD’s business. Agility, initiative, focus and creativity will be important characteristics for succeeding in this role. The Company’s headquarters are located in Mississauga however, this role will be remote during the foreseeable future until such time as the Covid-19 pandemic permits a safe return to normal office operations.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Understand the complex, variable and quickly shifting cannabis legal and regulatory regimes in the jurisdictions in which TGOD operates
  • Work closely with various stakeholders across the organization to understand the business and identify and address the various risks affecting TGOD’s operations
  • Negotiate contracts with TGOD’s partners, vendors, consultants
  • Advise on regulatory aspects of product launches including product composition, packaging, labelling and marketing
  • Work with Government Affairs and R&D teams to build open and collaborative relationships with regulators
  • Maintain high level of ethics, integrity and professional judgment while providing innovative and creative legal solutions to support strategic business initiatives and objectives

 

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor/Bachelor of Laws
  • 4-7 years experience with focus on corporate/commercial law, preferably in both private practice and in-house environments
  • Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Self-directed and motivated with ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing priorities; exceptional time-management skills
  • Superior analytical skills with ability to think creatively to resolve novel and complex legal issues
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to influence and develop trusted relationships with internal clients and external contacts
  • Experience negotiating with government agencies/regulators an asset
  • Regulated industry experience (pharmaceuticals, tobacco, alcohol) an asset
  • Securities law experience an asset
  • Fluency in French an asset
