In a major development against drug trafficking, Dominican anti-narcotics authorities, in a collaborative operation with several state agencies, have confiscated an estimated 1.4 tons of cocaine in the southern Peravia province. The operation, which led to the arrest of four individuals, was executed based on critical intelligence leads and was coordinated by the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office).
Unfolding of the Operation
The operation was set into motion following intelligence reports which led to a pursuit of suspects in a speedboat. The chase concluded in a wooded area of Boca Canasta, in the Baní municipality, situated about 70 kilometers west of the capital. Subsequent to the chase, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and military personnel implemented a rigorous 15-hour operation near a beach.
The Significant Bust
During the operation, three vehicles were intercepted leading to the discovery of 58 packages containing 1,435 packets of cocaine. The drug cache was marked with specific logos and was wrapped in adhesive tape. In addition to the drugs, a 30-foot unnamed and unregistered boat equipped with powerful outboard engines was also recovered from the coast. The boat and vehicles are currently slated for a more thorough examination to check for additional drugs, weapons, or money.
Commitment Against Drug Trafficking
This significant crackdown is an exemplary showcase of the Dominican government’s commitment to staunchly combat drug trafficking, money laundering, and related crimes. The DNCD’s statement underlines the government’s unwavering resolve to tackle such grave issues and its efforts to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The operation’s success is also testament to the effectiveness of inter-institutional collaboration and intelligence-led policing in counteracting drug trafficking networks.
