A high school dean who takes medical cannabis for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was fired from a Florida school district after testing positive for cannabis. Mike Hickman, 51, fought in Iraq during the Gulf Storm war decades ago. In order to deal with debilitating trauma, he resorted to medical cannabis over ten years ago—which was the only thing that seemed to work.
The district learned of Hickman’s affinity for medical cannabis one year ago when he was injured while breaking up a fight at Belleview High School. A workers’ compensation doctor who treated Hickman detected cannabis metabolites in a urine test, and promptly reported it to the district.
