Bundeswehr Maintains Comprehensive Cannabis Bans for Soldiers
2026-01-30 | According to the federal government (printed matter 21/3928), no differentiated data on disciplinary consequences for cannabis use in the Bundeswehr have been available since 2018. In response to a written question by Bundestag MP Ates Gürpinar, Parliamentary State Secretary Nils Schmid (both Die Linke) stated that statistics on disciplinary measures for narcotics misuse do not record which substance was consumed.
However, in examinations of applicants, detected cannabis use can still lead to the medical classifications “permanently unfit for military service” or “temporarily unfit for military service”. These assessments are recorded under general health codes without a separate identification of cannabis.
With regard to current legal changes, the federal government stated that the Konsumcannabisgesetz continues to prohibit cannabis consumption in military areas of the Bundeswehr. In addition, restrictions under the Soldatengesetz remain in place outside of duty and military premises.
