GdP Vice President Poitz criticizes current Cannabis Act as a “defective product”
2025-12-27 | In a detailed interview on YouTube, Alexander Poitz, Deputy Federal Chairman of the German Police Union (GdP), drew a differentiated balance of cannabis policy and sharply criticized the existing Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG) as a defective product. Contrary to a blanket rejection of legalization, Poitz emphasized that the GdP fundamentally supports regulation, as pure enforcement policy over the past 50 years has failed. However, the current implementation results in massive additional workload for officers, as complex distance rules and small-quantity checks are hardly practicable in daily operations. A central problem remains the black market, which has not been dried up due to the lack of legal sales outlets, allowing organized crime to continue generating billions in revenue and consolidating its structures.
For a functioning realignment, the GdP calls for clear standards and scientifically accompanied pilot projects with controlled dispensing points to create legal certainty for citizens and police. Poitz also underscores unresolved challenges in road traffic, where legally secure threshold values and better technical equipment for checks are lacking. Only through honest and comprehensive regulation that effectively ensures child and youth protection can the police actually be relieved. The current system, by contrast, overloads security authorities through bureaucratic hurdles and legal ambiguities instead of delivering the promised easing in crime statistics.
