Pharmacists’ associations call for stricter regulation of cannabis clubs and welcome planned restrictions

Thomas Preis, President of ABDA, stated that better regulation could reduce health risks, as studies increasingly show dangers beyond psychological disorders. Accordingly, the risk of cardiovascular death as well as type 2 diabetes appears significantly higher among cannabis users than among non-users. In addition, cannabis can inhibit the metabolism of numerous medications such as blood thinners, psychotropic drugs, and certain cancer medications, thereby enhancing their effects.
With regard to medical cannabis, Preis welcomed the federal government’s plan to allow prescriptions only after personal doctor contact in the future. He noted that private prescriptions for cannabis flowers have risen sharply since partial legalization last year. He cited cannabis platforms that mediate prescriptions without personal contact after completing an online questionnaire as the main cause. “Counseling in the pharmacy is particularly important for cannabis flowers because they are a medicinal product with significant addiction potential and strong effects on brain development in young people,” the association president added.
