Gibraltar: Customs seizes nearly half a tonne of cocaine worth an estimated £25 million

Customs has seized nearly half a tonne of cocaine during two separate operations in local waters, with a combined estimated street value of twenty-five million pounds.

The drugs were discovered hidden in the sea chest areas of two bulk carriers, the MV Amaris and the MV Chao TianMen, both of which had entered Gibraltar’s waters to take on fuel.

Local diving companies conducting routine hull inspections identified the suspicious packages and alerted Customs, whose specialist divers recovered the concealed drugs.

Investigators found no evidence that any crew members were involved, and no indication the drugs were destined for Gibraltar.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo congratulated Customs and the diving companies involved, saying their vigilance was something Gibraltar should be proud of.
