India: Nauni varsity sets up cannabis research lab to power Himachal’s ‘Green to Gold’ mission

State-of-the-art facility to lead medicinal cannabis research, quality testing & germplasm mapping, paving the way for regulated cultivation, scientific innovation & a high-value hemp economy

Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, has established a state-of-the-art Cannabis Quality Testing and Research Laboratory, giving a major boost to Himachal Pradesh’s ambitious “Green to Gold” initiative that seeks to legalise and regulate the cultivation of industrial hemp. The facility, among the first dedicated laboratories of its kind in the state, is expected to become the scientific backbone of Himachal’s efforts to transform cannabis from an illegally traded crop into a regulated, research-driven and economically valuable resource.

The laboratory has been set up at a time when the state government is laying the groundwork for controlled cultivation of industrial hemp. The initiative aims to ensure that hemp grown in Himachal contains less than 0.3 per cent Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the internationally accepted threshold that makes the crop non-intoxicating and unsuitable for recreational drug use while retaining its value for fibre, seeds, pharmaceuticals and wellness products.
