A man from Louisiana has been sentenced to jail after staff at San Francisco International Airport found 30 pounds of marijuana in his suitcase before he tried to board a flight to the Netherlands, San Mateo County prosecutors said Thursday.
In February 2025, 50-year-old Rafe Paul Grant had checked his bag at SFO with a ticket on a flight to Amsterdam on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. A random bag check found that he was transporting drugs and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent detained him.
A further search of the bag revealed 26 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana with a total weight of just over 30 pounds, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Grant was charged with transportation of marijuana for the purpose of sale and remained out on bail as his case proceeded.
This week, Grant’s attorney withdrew a motion to suppress evidence. Grant pleaded no contest to the felony charge on the condition of six months in county jail instead of state prison.
Grant was placed on two years of supervised probation and six months of county jail. He was also ordered to abstain from drugs, possess no dangerous weapons or ammunition, and pay $370 in fees.
