A serving prison officer is one of three people accused of smuggling drugs and phones into a Luxembourg prison, the public prosecutor’s office said on Monday.
The employee of the Uerschterhaff Prison (CPU) in Sanem was brought before an investigating judge at the end of last week, alongside two other suspects – an inmate and an alleged outside supplier to the prison. It came after police and the judiciary uncovered an illegal trade in drugs and mobile phones in the prison.
The trio are alleged to have smuggled hashish and smartphones into the prison over a period of several months.
“The possible involvement of an official responsible for compliance with the rules and security within a prison in illegal activities represents a serious attack on the integrity of the prison system and on the trust that society places in its institutions,” the public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
