KUALA LUMPUR: A singer in a band heaved a sigh of relief after the High Court today acquitted and freed her of a charge of trafficking 400g of cocaine in 2023.
Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin ordered the release of Emily Leong Jo Yee, 29, at the end of the prosecution’s case, without calling for her defence.
The court found that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case.
Leong’s lawyer, Sivahnanthan Ragava, said she had been held on remand at Kajang Women’s Prison since her arrest in November 2023.
Although Leong declined to comment following her release, Sivahnanthan said his client had been vindicated and was looking forward to starting a new life after the harrowing experience.
“She feels happy that she gets to return to her family after being in remand for so long,” he said.
