Exports from Canada contributed to 61% of all medical cannabis Australia imported in 2025, according to the newest figures from the country’s cannabis regulator.
The country’s domestic supply has also increased significantly. Australia produced more cannabis than it imported from Canada in 2025, the first time since 2022.
Australia imported 81,119 kilograms of cannabis for medical purposes in 2025, a 5% increase from 2024 and an 82% increase from 2023. About one-quarter of the nation’s total cannabis imports were still held in inventory at the end of 2025.
Exports from Thailand accounted for another 25% of Australia’s medical cannabis imports in 2025, up from just 1% the previous year.
South Africa, New Zealand, Colombia, Portugal, and Denmark contributed another 13% combined. Lesotho, Israel, the United States, Germany, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland also exported medical cannabis products to Australia in 2025.
While Canada was still the largest exporter, the amount of cannabis from the Great White North declined by 21% from 62,111 kilograms in 2024.
The single largest source of the country’s cannabis came from domestic sources in 2025 (41%), while another 36% came from Canada, 15% came from Thailand, and 8% came from all other countries combined.
Medical cannabis companies in Australia also exported 6,780 kilograms of cannabis in 2025, a 105% increase from the previous year. While nine kilograms of cannabis were exported from Australia into Canada in 2024, none were exported to Canada in 2025. Most of Australia’s exports (3,668 kg) went to Germany, with another 1,500 kg to Czechia (the Czech Republic).
Australia produced 55,337 kilograms of cannabis for medical purposes in 2025, up from 42,420 in 2024 and 27,122 in 2023. There were 29,366 kilograms of domestically cultivated cannabis in stock at the end of 2025, with another 21,389 kilograms that had been imported.
Exports of medical cannabis from Canada into Australia are dominated by a handful of larger licensed producers like Aurora Cannabis, Tilray Medical, and Village Farms International. In 2025, MTL Cannabis announced its expansion into the Australian market. MTL was acquired by Canopy in 2026.
Other companies, such as Avicanna, Nextleaf Solutions, and Herbal Dispatch, have also recently announced exports to Australia in the 2026 calendar year.
Australia is not the only country relying on cannabis from Canada to satisfy growing demand. Germany, the UK, and Israel also see a majority of their cannabis come from Canada, which has had a fully regulated commercial medical cannabis program since 2013, although exports did not begin in earnest for several years after.
