An 80-year-old man was one of four people arrested last week following a police raid just west of the island of Montreal where 1,600 marijuana plants were seized.

Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Bruno Beaulieu said the raid in Ste. Justine de Newton, just west of St. Lazarre, was conducted following a tip from the public.

Police found 1,600 marijuana plants in the barn next to the home on 4th Range Road home.

Police did not give an estimate of the value of the plants but $1,000 a plant is often accepted as the going value.

Edward White, 80, of St. Constant, along with Gordon Lynch, 45, also of St. Constant, and  Mélanie Lanthier, 33, and André Gravel, 52, of Ste. Justine de Newton appeared at Valleyfield Court on Feb. 18 on charges of cultivating marijuana and theft of electricity.
