Morocco: El Jadida: Authorities seize 2.5 tons of hashish in major drug bust

Moroccan gendarmerie forces carried out a major anti-drug operation early Friday, intercepting a large shipment of hashish and arresting three suspects believed to be involved in an international trafficking ring.

According to an official source, the operation took place in the village of Oulad Boumehdi, located in the Sidi Mohamed Akhdim commune. Authorities stopped a Ford Transit van carrying approximately 60 bales of cannabis resin (locally known as chira), with a total weight of about 2.5 metric tons. The vehicle was allegedly being prepared for transport as part of a cross-border trafficking scheme.

Three individuals suspected of organizing the smuggling attempt were arrested at the scene.

The investigation, led under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, is ongoing. Authorities are working to identify additional suspects and dismantle the broader criminal network behind the operation.

The successful seizure is part of a broader security strategy adopted by the Royal Gendarmerie in the El Jadida region to combat transnational drug trafficking. The raid follows a series of recent operations that have thwarted similar drug smuggling efforts, as well as attempts at irregular migration.

Officials underscored that the latest operation reflects heightened efforts to protect public safety and curb the operations of organized crime networks across the region.
