New Zealand: A thousand cannabis plants discovered in Christchurch operation

A million dollar crop of cannabis plants has been found by Christchurch police searching a property in Waltham.

Four men at the premises, aged 37 and 39, were taken into custody, and subsequently charged.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tania Jellyman said: “We will not tolerate this type of offending, and further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation continues.”

The men appeared in Christchurch District Court on Thursday charged with possessing cannabis for supply, cultivates cannabis, and participating in an organised criminal group. There were remanded in custody to await their next appearances in court on April 9.

Of the more than 1000 cannabis plants located at the property, worth an estimated $1.1m, Jellyman said the profits would have gone to fund a “range of organised criminal activity” in the community,.

“We will continue to target illicit drug operations on commercial scales such at this, as we see the harm it causes and the impact it has within our community every day.”

Police acknowledged support from members of the public around information on illegal operations occurring within their community.
