After months of political wrangling, in-fighting, and delays, New Jersey lawmakers are finally poised fir their first vote on legalizing the recreational adult use of cannabis. Committees in both the Assembly and Senate are expected to meet and vote on bill S2703 on Monday, November 26th. Governor Murphy and Senate President Sweeney remain in disagreement over tax rates and regulatory oversight. Murphy supports as 25% tax rate while Sweeney is concerned such a high rate will encourage a black market.

Garden State legislative committees are also considering expanding New Jersey’s medical cannabis program. The number of patients has more than doubled in 2018 after Governor Murphy relaxed restrictions by executive action earlier this year.

If the legislation moves out of committee it still requires approval by both the New Jersey Assembly and Senate before going to governor for his signature into law.
