A field of tall hemp plants could sway in the breeze just a block from the Christ Church Cathedral if a new proposal gets the go-ahead.

A new cannabis institute, called Whakamana, has proposed a hemp crop on a vacant central Christchurch site as it launches a $2 million crowd-funding campaign to fit out its new premises.

Industrial hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant with no psychoactive properties, can be grown in New Zealand under a special licence from the Ministry of Health. But the Christchurch plan could struggle as licence conditions dictate hemp cannot be grown within sight of a main public road or within five kilometres of a residential area.
