Mugglehead report
On July 15, the Omaha Tribe in Nebraska officially announced that it had created the state’s first legal and regulated marijuana framework. The tribal council of the indigenous group voted unanimously to adopt the Cannabis Regulatory Code (Title 51), allowing both the distribution and consumption of cannabis for recreational and medicinal purposes on reservation lands.
The code establishes requirements for licensing, seed-to-sale tracking, marketing, testing, law enforcement, education, and more. It will also facilitate the creation of an Omaha Cannabis Regulatory Commission with up to five members.
Achieving this goal has been a priority for the group over the past decade, and the Native American tribe aims to play a leading role in this regard.
“This isn’t just about cannabis,” said Jason Sheridan, chairman of the Omaha Tribe, in a press release. “It’s about creating real opportunities for our people, asserting our sovereignty, and showing the region what tribal leadership looks like.”
The nonprofit organization Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana immediately welcomed the move. This group played a pivotal role in the legalization of medical cannabis in the state. Its goal is to alleviate suffering through responsible use of the plant.
“Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana stands in full solidarity with the Omaha Tribe and with every patient and caregiver seeking comprehensive, safe and legal access to medical cannabis,” the organization said in a bulletin shared on social media.
