As part of an operation to combat drug trafficking, the Judicial Police (PJ) seized more than 2.200 kilograms of cannabis leaves today from a company in Grândola, in the Setúbal district. Although the company’s identity has not been revealed, the establishment in question claimed to be engaged in the production of medicinal cannabis, but investigators suspect that it actually supplied cannabis to criminal networks for the illicit market.
The operation, conducted by the Southern Directorate of the PJ in coordination with Infarmed (the regulatory authority for medicines and health products in Portugal), arose from ongoing investigations related to illicit drug trafficking. According to the official statements, the production site was part of a wider network of drug distribution across the country and potentially across borders.
It was confirmed by a PJ spokesperson that the establishment, located in a rural area of Grândola, was not operating transparently and within the legal framework expected of licensed cannabis producers. The police report highlights fundamental concerns regarding irregularities and violations of regulations regarding medicinal cannabis.
This substantial seizure arises following a previous seizure, which occurred on June 17, during which four individuals—three men and one woman, aged between 25 and 45—were arrested in Grândola and Lagoa, in the Algarve. All suspects were foreign nationals and were arrested on:
- 20 kilos of hashish;
- MDMA crystals;
- More than €20,000 in cash;
- Equipment for pressing hash, vacuum packaging, dosing and labeling substances.
Following the arrests, the suspects were remanded in custody while authorities continued their investigation into the full scope of the operation.
Although the facility presented itself as a legitimate cultivation site for medicinal cannabis, the reality was clearly different. According to law enforcement, the purpose was not therapeutic use, but rather the supply of large quantities of illegal substances to organized crime networks.
