Court Bans Cannabis Tele-Prescriptions: Telemedicine Not Permitted for Cannabis
2025-07-11 | The Regional Court of Munich I has prohibited the online platform Goeasy from issuing cannabis prescriptions via telemedicine and advertising such services, reports the Pharmazeutische Zeitung. Goeasy had offered cannabis prescriptions after users completed a short online questionnaire, which were then filled by a pharmacy in Rhineland-Palatinate. The court ruled that this violated advertising laws for remote treatments and the prescription referral ban under pharmacy regulations.
The court argued that telemedical prescriptions for medical cannabis do not meet established professional standards, especially for addictive substances like cannabis, where a personal doctor-patient contact is necessary. Even video consultations cannot clarify all relevant aspects, which increases the risk of cannabis misuse.
The platform was also criticized for not informing customers which doctor was issuing the prescription, which was deemed misleading. The court classified the platform’s advertising as unlawful and emphasized that cannabis prescriptions may not be issued through remote treatment. The ruling is not yet final but is considered precedent-setting and strengthens the position of the North Rhine Chamber of Pharmacists, which filed the case.
