South Africa: Hemp Research Hub relaunches platform spanning farm to pharmacy

The Tshwane University of Technology’s Cannabis and Hemp Research and Innovation Platform, recently relaunched in South Africa, is supporting farmers, entrepreneurs and industry professionals across the cannabis and hemp value chain through research and development, training and contract extraction services.

Professor David Katerere, Professor of Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical and Biotech Advancement in Africa Research Group Leader and Co-Director of the TUT/CSIR Cannabis and Hemp Research Hub, leads the platform’s efforts to strengthen research, innovation and specialised services in the sector. His work spans pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, formulation and agro-processing, and he collaborates with a team of South African and international students and researchers.

The platform operates as part of the broader TUT/CSIR Cannabis and Hemp Research Hub, which draws on expertise from pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, crop sciences, engineering and agro-processing. Researchers are exploring applications including cannabis-based medicines, nutraceuticals, sustainable agricultural practices and biochar. The Hub’s infrastructure includes a supercritical carbon dioxide extraction system that TUT describes as unique in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Using a farm-to-pharmacy approach, the Hub develops formulations targeting conditions such as arthritis, eczema, alopecia and hyperpigmentation. TUT and the CSIR have secured hemp permits for both research and commercialisation, opening avenues for further product development and collaboration.

Maria Lloyd, of SA Management 24, contributes marketing and positioning expertise to the platform, helping connect scientific innovation with commercial strategy. In 2026, Lloyd joined Prof Katerere during an African Research Network session examining how natural product innovation moves from research to market, with the engagement highlighting the role of business positioning and communication in that process.
