South Carolina hemp industry sounding alarm on proposed legislation

On Tuesday, South Carolina Senators sent a proposed bill with new regulations to the House, focused on the Hemp industry.

South Carolina hemp experts, however, are sounding the alarm about House Bill 3924, aimed at adding restrictions to the industry.

“If this bill were to pass, 90 to 95% of folks that are invested in this business today would have to go out of business or move out of state,” says Zach Serrins with the South Carolina Healthy Alternatives Association.

“We’ve been as an industry and an organization begging for comprehensive, responsible regulations for three years now, and to be stabbed in the back like this with a dirty trick is very disappointing, and my hope is that the House meets us where we’re at and takes us up in a good faith effort,” Serrins says.

H.3924 lays new restrictions, including where and when you can purchase these products.

“What they’ve done with it is they’ve essentially turned it into a ban bill. They’ve taken the industry, cut it down by about 90%, ” Serrins explains.

The bill approves hemp drinks up to 10 milligrams and would let gummy products be sold at liquor stores only. Drinks between one and 5 milligrams would have to be sold behind the counter at locations with beer and wine licenses.
