Three wallabies are recovering at a Spanish zoo after police rescued them from an illegal cannabis plantation where authorities say dozens of animals were living in unsanitary conditions alongside decomposing carcasses.
Spain’s National Police shared video of the June 30 raid on social media on Thursday, July 2, showing officers entering the rural property in the municipality of Malagón, in the province of Ciudad Real.
According to police, officers initially began investigating the site as part of a marijuana cultivation case. But after entering the property, they discovered what they described as a “unusual scene.”

In addition to dismantling six indoor marijuana-growing operations containing nearly 1,000 cannabis plants, officers found three wallabies, two roe deer, three calves and 14 dogs living in filthy conditions, police said.
Authorities also found numerous dead animals in advanced stages of decomposition, including hundreds of chickens that investigators said had been discarded in bags and fed to the dogs, according to The Straits Times and The Standard.
The wallabies and deer were being kept in a garden used by the suspects and their young children, police said.
Following the rescue, the three wallabies, marsupials native to Australia that resemble smaller kangaroos, were transported to a zoo in Spain’s Toledo province, where they are recovering after what officials described as a traumatic ordeal.
Police also uncovered an underground marijuana production area that was illegally connected to the electrical grid. Two people were arrested in connection with the raid.
