Spanish farmers demand compensation after seizure of hemp harvest

Two growers from the province of Lleida have filed a state liability claim against the Spanish government over financial losses stemming from the seizure of an industrial hemp harvest that was held for two years as part of a judicial investigation.

The couple is seeking compensation of close to one million euros for losses incurred after they were unable to sell their crop, which was seized after authorities suspected it might be marijuana.

The case dates back to March 2023, when the Mossos d’Esquadra intercepted a shipment of approximately 30 kilograms of hemp that the growers had sent as a commercial sample. That action triggered an investigation into an alleged public health offence, and authorities ordered the seizure of the entire stored harvest.

The growers had set up a company dedicated to cultivating and marketing industrial hemp and had planted around 40,000 Cannabis sativa seeds on a plot of just over four hectares in Juneda, in the province of Lleida. After harvest, the crop was moved to drying facilities, where it remained in storage throughout the investigation.
