Texas: Young woman held after over 400 lbs of marijuana found in her pickup

McLennan County, Tx (FOX 44) – A 19-year-old woman was arrested after 418 pounds of marijuana were found in her pickup after she was stopped on I-35 for speeding.

Amaya Jeanette Valdez was initially booked into the McLennan County Jail on a felony charge of possession of marijuana over 50 pounds. She was later taken into federal custody.

The arrest came about as a DPS trooper spotted a gray Toyota pickup going south on I-35 near the Hill/McLennan County line that was clocked as going 84 mph in a 75 mph zone. The trooper also noted the driver was traveling in the left lane while not passing any other vehicles as she entered McLennan County.

The trooper conducted the traffic stop about a mile south of the county line.

As the trooper made an approach to the vehicle from the passenger side, he reported detecting the smell of raw marijuana coming from the pickup. The driver identified herself and told the trooper she was traveling from Dallas to her home in San Antonio. An arrest affidavit stated that during the interview, the trooper observed what he thought was deceptive behavior and conducted probable cause search of the vehicle. That was when the large amount of marijuana was discovered. The affidavit stated the preliminary weight was 418.8 pounds.

At that point Valdez was taken into custody and transported to the McLennan County Jail.
