The Brazilian Navy has found 3.6 metric tons of cocaine heading to Africa

The Brazilian Navy and its Federal Police nabbed 3.6 metric tons of cocaine, almost 8,000 pounds, from a boat just off the coast of Brazil’s State of Pernambuco on Tuesday, according to a translated press release from the country’s navy.

It was the biggest single seizure of cocaine off the coast of the South American country, the statement added. The confiscation was part of “Operation Ágata Nordeste,” the country’s initiative to stop environmental and cross-border crimes.

The ship, which was headed to Africa, had crew five members aboard, the press release said. Since 2020, the Brazilian Navy has seized over 17 tons of cocaine, along with 695 tons of cigarettes, and 15.7 tons of marijuana, according to the release.
