The 2026 FIFA World Cup is not even a week in, and already its biggest impact may well have come well away from the field in a country that isn’t even qualified for the tournament.
Col. Carlos Alcántara, the head of the Green Squadron in Peru, recently used the World Cup mascots to help go undercover and capture 48-year-old Carlos Cabrera during the opening match of the World Cup between Mexico and South Africa.
Video of the arrest posted on the unit’s TikTok page showed undercover officers dressed as the World Cup mascots and escorting Cabrera away after allegedly seizing 2,524 packets of cocaine.
