Here’s what they say
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has issued a public advisory regarding the rising use of marijuana-infused edibles, particularly at social gatherings.
In an official statement, the police raised public awareness about the increasing prevalence of marijuana-infused edibles at social gatherings. In a notice, they urged caution when consuming such items.
“Edibles can have unpredictable effects, as the potency and delayed onset of symptoms vary significantly from person to person,” the statement warned.
To address this issue, the police provided the following guidelines to promote safety and awareness:
1. Identify the Items Clearly
• Always ask about the ingredients in food items being served, especially baked goods, candies, or beverages. Hosts should label marijuana-infused items clearly to prevent unintentional consumption.
• If in doubt, avoid consuming any food that is not clearly identified as non-infused.
2. Start with Caution
• If you decide to consume marijuana-infused edibles, start with a very small portion and wait at least 1-2 hours before considering additional consumption. Unlike smoking marijuana, the effects of edibles take longer to manifest.
• Avoid mixing edibles with alcohol or other substances, as this can intensify the effects and increase the likelihood of adverse reactions.
3. Be Aware of Individual Reactions
• Understand that people react differently to marijuana. Factors such as metabolism, body weight, and prior experience can influence the intensity of effects.
• If you are new to edibles, it’s best to consume them in a safe, familiar environment rather than at a party.
4. Recognize Signs of Overconsumption
• Symptoms of overconsumption may include severe anxiety, confusion, nausea, dizziness, or a rapid heart rate. If you or someone else exhibits these signs, seek medical attention promptly.
5. Look Out for Others
• If you are hosting, inform your guests about the presence of marijuana-infused edibles and ensure they are stored or served responsibly to prevent accidental ingestion by children or those who wish to avoid marijuana.
• At a party, encourage friends to exercise caution and avoid pressuring anyone to consume such items.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force reminds the public to remain vigilant and considerate when dealing with such products to ensure the well-being of all involved.
