Florida: Man arrested at RSW with 24 pounds of weed

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Police with the Southwest Florida International Airport arrested a traveler after being tipped off by authorities in Sacramento, California.

According to deputies with the Sacramento Sheriffs Office, Jelani Reid checked 24 pounds of marijuana in his luggage on December 13th.

Recreational marijuana is legal in California, but it’s illegal to cross state lines with it.

Sacramento deputies let Reid board the plane and travel to Fort Myers, and flagged RSW officers of Reid’s travel. Sacramento deputies also sent pictures of Reid, his luggage, and the marijuana for authorities in Fort Myers.

Reid boarded a Delta plane and flew from Sacramento, had a layover in Atlanta, and arrived in Fort Myers Monday morning.

Members of the RSW Airport PD, DEA and FHP were waiting for Reid’s flight to arrive.

An FHP K9 team searched Reid’s luggage, and the dog detected the presence of marijuana. Officers searched the bag and found 21 vacuum sealed bags of marijuana.

At that point, troopers put Reid’s luggage back on the baggage belt.

According to Reid’s arrest report, law enforcement watched Reid at the baggage claim. Reid clocked the RSW officer watching him, and didn’t pick up his bag, walking out of the terminal.

Officers then detained Reid, and he admitted the luggage was his and said knew he was transporting marijuana.
