Morocco

Morocco’s security services seized  approximately six tonnes of cannabis resin on Sunday, February 13.

Moroccan news agency MAP quoted a military source as saying that the abortion of the international drug trafficking attempt was part of the sureveillance of Moroccan borders.

Elements of the Royal Armed Forces foiled the international drug trafficking attempt along the line of defense at Oum Dreyga in Morocco’s Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.

Security services detected the drugs in four vehicles, MAP reported, adding that; the drivers had escaped the vehicles by the time security agents arrived.

FAR elements handed all drugs as well as the vehicles seized during the operation to the Royal Gendarmerie for more investigation.

The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and arrest all suspects involved in trafficking networks operating between Morocco and its neighboring countries.

According to the 2021 annual report from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), police handled 82,950 cases related to possession and drug trafficking.

About 103,589 people were referred to courts, including 261 foreigners for drug-related crimes.

In 2021, police seized 191 tonnes and 158 kilograms of cannabis, one of the most used drugs in Morocco.

DGSN said that the amount of hashish seized this year represents a decrease of 12% compared to 2020.

Police also seized three kilograms of heroin, a number which also represents a significant decrease of 64 % compared to last year.

Joint operations by DGSN and the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) also  resulted in the seizing of 1,437,362 psychotropic tablets, including 53,756 ecstasy tablets, a record increase of over 201%.
