Maritime police in the Algarve seized around one tonne of hashish divided amongst 20 bales which were thrown into the sea during an early morning high-speed boat chase.
The suspects were able to flee after they were detected by maritime police during an operation in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 20 nautical miles off the south coast of the Algarve between Lagos and Albufeira.
During the chase, the suspects dumped the bales of drugs into the sea. The bales were later collected by maritime police agents with the assistance of a Portuguese Navy speedboat.
The drugs were handed over to PJ criminal police.
