The Role

As a proactive leader, the Retail Regulatory Counsel will lead and develop the Regulatory Compliance Retail group and will be a knowledge expert for cannabis compliance regulations related to Retail Operations and Asset Protection Solutions (“APS”) in states where GTI operates and in expansion markets as the company grows. This individual will work closely with leaders of the Retail Operations and APS teams to support retail operations and ensure compliance with all aspects of cannabis regulations. This individual will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Litigation & Regulatory Compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Independently review, analyze, and keep current on developments in state and federal laws and regulations affecting the cannabis industry and apply and effectively communicate same to the Retail and APS teams and key stakeholders.
  • Provide regulatory guidance and ongoing regulatory compliance support to retail facilities across all markets.
  • Investigate and respond to notices of deficiencies and regulatory disputes from agencies across the country, and provide quarterly updates concerning same to Retail and APS leadership.
  • Assist with coordinating retail responses and actively participate in the resolution of regulatory inquiries or issues.
  • Maintain regular dialog with the Retail and APS teams and provide updates to upper management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to pursue continuous process improvement, including the development of tracking and reporting functionality both within and outside of the compliance programs utilized by the Retail and APS teams.
  • Assist the Retail and APS teams with updating and submitting Operations Plans and Standard Operating Procedures to the regulatory agencies for review and approval.
  • Assist the Retail and APS teams with regulatory submissions (e.g., variances, modifications, alteration change requests) for approval in addition to training on when these required requests must be initiated based on regulatory requirements.
  • Assist the Retail and APS teams, as requested, with internal regulatory compliance audits, and other projects as needed, to prepare the facility for regulatory inspection.
  • Assist the Retail and APS teams with reviews of internal compliance audits/regulatory inspection reports to identify reoccurring compliance issues.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport and communication with inspectors, state police and regulatory agencies. This includes regular training and provision of resources for the Retail and APS teams concerning effective regulatory communication.

Qualifications

  • Licensed attorney with JD Degree from an accredited law school.
  • 3+ years regulatory law experience, ideally in the regulated cannabis industry or another highly regulated industry, such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, gaming, or tobacco.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate in a professional manner both internally and externally with regulators.
  • Operates with a high level of professionalism and integrity, including dealing with confidential information.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, efficient, and resourceful with strong follow-through skills.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed, innovative and able to work independently or among teams with keen judgement, common sense, and resourcefulness.
  • Adapts and thrives in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Possesses a high level of critical thinking.
  • Operates with a high level of professionalism and integrity, including dealing with confidential information.
  • Must understand and comply with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Green Thumb Industries.
  • Must have a solid understanding of the cannabis laws, rules, and regulations and passion to further your understanding and knowledge of the industry and the laws.

Preferred

  • Law firm and/or regulatory agency experience is preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass any and all required background checks
  • Some travel may be required, up to 10%
  • Must be and remain compliant with all legal or company regulations for working in the industry
  • Must possess valid driver’s license
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
