LPP: Maurice Shumate Returns Home

On February 23rd, 2022, Last Prisoner Project constituent Maurice Shumate was released from prison after serving 6 years of a 15-year sentence for a non-violent cannabis offense. He was met by family members and is looking forward to a “great future” ahead.

Maurice said, “Last Prisoner Project, helped me turn my life around in positive ways with encouragement. I am thankful and grateful for all of their help. Now I can see a positive light at the end of the tunnel. I also see a great future with me raising my 4 children as a good father and productive citizen.”

While we celebrate Maurice’s freedom, we must highlight the fact that this father of four lost years of his life for the very same thing that has made others in his own home state millions of dollars. This injustice is what propels us forward in our work — and why we are so passionate about freeing every last cannabis prisoner. Read more on Maurice’s story in our LPP blog post and in recent coverage by Herb.
