The report reveals that the advisory board will be created to provide advice and expertise as needed by the Agriculture Commissioner with respect to the administration of the state’s industrial hemp research pilot program.
“The members will represent producers, processors and researchers as well as other professionals in the industrial hemp industry,” Goehring said. “The program has grown to the point that an advisory board is needed to provide advice and expertise on market potential, identify new research objectives and to review prospective research proposals.

The advisory board will convene in January to review proposals for 2018.
Industrial hemp may only be grown in North Dakota through the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s pilot program or by institutions of higher education. The department’s pilot program focuses on agricultural and academic research. Participants planted 70 acres of industrial hemp in 2016 and more than 3,000 acres in 2017.
