Australia – Melbourne: Man charged over $500,000 inner-city cannabis haul

A man has been charged after about $500,000 worth of cannabis was found inside a house in inner Melbourne.

More than 130 mature cannabis plants, 1.5 kilograms of bagged cannabis and a small amount of methamphetamine were seized from a Port Melbourne home on Wednesday.

Police say they searched the property as part of a wider probe into into alleged large-scale cultivation and trafficking in the bayside suburb.

A 55-year-old Port Melbourne man was arrested and led away in handcuffs.

Footage taken by police at the house shows officers carrying large hessian bags filled with green plants.

The man has been charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis and was due to face court on Thursday.

Victoria Police Sergeant Grant Farley said he was pleased to prevent such a significant amount of drugs from hitting the streets.

“We know that the consequences of drugs out in the community can be detrimental, including road trauma caused by impaired drivers, flow-on mental health impacts and financially funding further criminal activity,” Sgt Farley said.
