West Australia: Extraordinary powers given to police to set up COVID-era-style borders at 22 points around Western Australia to stop drugs from entering the state have stopped just 5 grams of cannabis from getting in.

WA Today reports on the pointlessness of it all!

That disappointing figure was revealed in parliament in response to questions from opposition justice spokesman Tjorn Sibma

In the eight months since border search powers were made available to police, they have been established just seven times – once at Albany Port, twice at Esperance Port and four times at Perth Airport.

During those operations, 53 vehicles and 17 people were searched, but just 5 grams of cannabis was found in a vehicle at Albany Port.

When they were announced a frustrated then-premier Mark McGowan said vehicles could be searched for fruits and vegetables but not drugs.

He said the laws would hopefully replicate the dramatic drop in drug use observed over the pandemic and “make it tougher than ever for organised crime to bring drugs into Western Australia”.

New wastewater testing data shows meth and cannabis use has skyrocketed since the COVID borders dropped in WA.

The National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program shows meth use was the highest it had been in four years, cannabis remains at record levels and cocaine use has tripled since data collection began in 2016.
