Trio charged after cannabis grow discovered in old cinema

Three men have appeared in court after police discovered a large cannabis grow inside an abandoned cinema.

Officers found more than 280 plants when they executed a warrant at the property, in Woodborough Road, Mapperley, Nottingham, on Wednesday (3 April) around 7am.

The building had been adapted into a living quarters and three separate areas in which cannabis was being cultivated.

Three men were detained by neighbourhood policing team officers at the address.

Kevin Charles, aged 38, Nicolae Dumitru, aged 34, and 26-year-old David Moore, all of no fixed abode, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (5 April) and were remanded in custody until their next appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on 3 May.

Inspector Steve Dalby, neighbourhood policing inspector for Nottingham South, said:

“This was a large cannabis grow and there was evidence in the building that it was being extended further.

“Cannabis production on this scale can cause numerous problems for people living in the area, including risk of fire, criminals attempting to break in and steal the crop and other associated crime.

“The neighbourhood team works hard to solve problems within our communities by targeting activity at local people’s priorities.

“As ever, though, we need your help. I’m grateful to members of the public who have provided us with the information needed to take positive action in this instance and I’d urge anyone who believes cannabis is being grown in their neighbourhood to let us know.”

All the cannabis seized from the address will be  destroyed and the equipment used to power the grow removed.
