LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The man accused of selling drugs that his girlfriend pulled from a Nebraska State Patrol evidence room has been sentenced.
Senior Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced 38-year-old George Weaver Jr. to 25 years in a federal prison on Wednesday. Weaver Jr. will undergo eight years of supervised release once he’s out.
Weaver Jr. faced three charges but pled down to just one count. He was convicted for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana.
The plea deal let Weaver Jr. avoid charges involving a large number of overdoses in Lincoln. According to authorities, 35 overdoses between July 25, 2021, and August 19, 2021, were traced back to Weaver Jr. Nine of those overdoses were fatal, and one pregnant woman lost her baby.
Prosecutors alleged that Weaver Jr. and his girlfriend, Anna Idigima, took drugs from the NSP evidence room following an audit in 2021. The audit revealed over $1.2 million worth of drugs were unaccounted for.
At the time, Idigima had been employed with the Nebraska State Patrol as an evidence technician. She had worked with the patrol for 14 years up until her firing on Aug. 27, 2021.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, video surveillance from NSP’s Lincoln evidence storage facility shows Idigima opening sealed boxes, taking items from those boxes, putting them in garbage bags and loading the bags into her personal vehicle on several occasions between June 16, 2021, and Aug. 12, 2021.
Over ten pounds of fentanyl, worth around $300,000, had been stolen from the room. Idigima had also stolen over 154 pounds of marijuana, 19.4 pounds of cocaine, nine pounds of heroin and three pounds of meth.
Weaver Jr. and Idigima were arrested on Sept. 21, 2021. Idigima was sentenced to 21 years and 10 months in prison on July 19, 2023. Like Weaver Jr., Idigima took a plea deal.
