New reporting obligations for the hemp sector in the EU
09/11/2024 | Regulation (EU) 2024/2391, which was adopted on September 10, 2024, introduces, among other things, new reporting obligations for the hemp sector. From October 1, 2025, EU Member States must report annual data on hemp prices. These reports are due by October 31 of each year and include
- The area planted with hemp in the previous year and an estimate for the current year (in hectares)
- The production of hemp fibres in the previous year and an estimate for the current year (in tons)
- The weighted average ex-factory prices for hemp fibers in the previous year (per ton)
The new reporting obligations apply to all member states in which hemp fibers are produced from an area of more than 1,000 hectares. The aim of this regulation is to bring the hemp sector to the same level of market transparency as other fiber crops, such as flax and cotton. These changes are part of a broader approach to improve reporting requirements in the agricultural sector to promote data collection and market transparency across the EU.
