An AUSTRAC intelligence report has assisted the arrest of a man who was subsequently charged with importing a commercial quantity of drugs.
AUSTRAC’s report enabled authorities to stop a Singaporean national who flew from Malaysia to Sydney on Thursday 20 February, who then abandoned two large suitcases containing 40kg kilos of meth and cocaine on a baggage carousel.
Following the discovery of the drugs, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) began a search for the 55 year old man for whom the alert was issued and successfully located and detained him in Adelaide the following day, Friday 21 February, where he was attempting to board a flight to Malaysia.
The man appeared in Downing Centre Local Court yesterday.
AUSTRAC analysts use financial reporting data from businesses, together with a range of other information, tools and specialist tradecraft to produce targeted financial intelligence for government and law enforcement partners.
The financial intelligence produced by AUSTRAC can trigger further investigations in a range of matters, including national security, money laundering, drug trafficking, child exploitation, fraud, and other serious and organised crime.
